Taghrooda builds on Oaks legacy

After taking Epsom by storm on 6th June 2014, Sheikh Hamdan’s home bred filly TAGHROODA (Sea the Stars x Ezima) took on and beat, not only the colts but also the older horses in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr.1) at Ascot on 26th July. In doing so, she became the first filly 38 years to complete the Oaks/ King George double.
In a statement, Angus Gold (Racing Manager) said:
“Sheikh Hamdan took the brave decision to run TAGHROODA in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, rather than going for the easier option of the Irish Oaks the previous weekend, and his faith in the filly was more than justified when she ran out a convincing winner of the King George, becoming the first three year old filly since PAWNESE in 1976 to win the race.
Obviously this was a great thrill for everybody at Shadwell, particularly as the filly was homebred out of a young Sadler’s Wells mare, and we have a yearling full sister at Derrinstown waiting to come into training next year.
TAGHROODA is not only a beautiful filly to look at but is blessed with an outstanding temperament – she takes everything in her stride and does it all with such effortless grace. In my twenty eight years at Shadwell we have had one top class filly before now in SALSABIL who won the Guineas and the Epsom Oaks before beating the colts in the Irish Derby – it has been a long time since she was in her prime, and so it is even more satisfying to have a filly of TAGHROODA’S class now.”
